Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are more or less similar terms in terms of their end objective, albeit with a slight difference. While virtual reality only helps temporarily recreate a real world experience in which the user is free to sign in and sign out at will, augmented reality goes a step further in extending your interaction and association with virtual objects into the real world.
The single biggest challenge in next-generation VR and AR applications would be due to complex networks and extreme power consumption. Also, performance requirements have to go beyond what is available today to make the solutions truly effective.
Advanced heterogeneous and powerful processors like Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 820 have the necessary computing and image processing capabilities to support such VR applications, however along with hardware features, it also needs appropriate firmware and frameworks to utilize processor’s maximum capability.
To address this, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., has recently launched a new virtual reality (VR) software development kit (SDK) for developers to access advanced VR features while helping them attain improved VR performance and power efficiency with the Snapdragon 820. The SDK will address the crucial requirements for an enhanced VR application which include: DSP sensor fusion, fast motion to photon, stereoscopic rendering with lens correction, VR layering and power management.
ERAGON 820 enables customers to add layer and depth in their audio-visual requirements for AR/VR with the following features:
- Audio headers that enable Hi-Fi Audio prototyping
- Support for three camera that enable higher/better pixel quantity and pixel quality based on choice of sensors that are supported
