The Role of Snapdragon 820 in 4k Ultra HD Technology

4K Ultra HD has changed the whole way we perceive image quality and videos. It is slowly making its presence felt across applications ranging from:

  • Cameras and camcorders – e.g. Panasonic Hc-X1000, Canon Cinema EOS C500)
  • Smartphones – e.g. Sony Xperia Z6, Samsung Galaxy S7
  • High Definition Televisions – e.g. Sony Bravia 4k
  • Gaming – e.g. PS4, Xbox One
  • Medical imaging – CT Scan devices, etc.

By 2025, at least 50% of US households will have a 4k television device. Video creators like NetFlix are expected to generate more content in 4k in the coming few years. 4K TV and Display have been launched by major manufacturers, but that is just the tip of a very cool technology iceberg. In this age of digital transformation, 4K video technology is will change the way we perceive things and operate.

What is 4K Technology?

4K quality means any image or video which delivers a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, four times the quality of Full HD definition.

The difference due to increased pixel count can be justified by comparing the same still image in both Full HD and 4K resulting into an enhanced level of detailing when you zoom into a smaller section of the image. Whereas the Full HD content will start blurring, you will be able to make out details in 4K resolution very easily, the user can relate with the image to identify content and definitions within.

4K technology is becoming widely accepted as the new resolution – for the ultimate in clarity. It is not only confined to TV and Displays and is adopted for embedded products across Surveillance, Medical Imaging and Machine Vision.

What works behind 4k Technology?

One of the most promising processors for the 4K solutions is Snapdragon 800 series. The latest Snapdragon 820 features Adreno 530 GPU that is designed to deliver a significant improvement in graphical and computing capabilities. Adreno 530 is also expected to reduce power consumption by up to 40% when compared to the previous generation Adreno 430 units, thereby making it the desired solution for latest embedded devices. In addition to Adreno 530 GPU, the processor also features Qualcomm Spectra dual Image Signal Processor (ISP) providing superior image quality and experience.

eInfochips® (www.einfochips.com), official licensee of Snapdragon 820 processor, is launching the kits for 4K camera  designs for product companies to accelerate their time-to-market. The reference design will be based on Eragon 820 System on Module (SoM) and will support a maximum of 32 MP camera products.
